The original professional Diver's 600m from 1978, the first diver's watch with a quartz hourwork. It was the follow-up of the glorious mechanical diver's watch from 1975, that was nicknamed by divers as the 'Tuna Can'.
Tested to the limit and above. Seiko's diver's watches have been praised by professional divers for more than 50 years for their power, durability and precision. This appreciation is the result of the incredibly high standard requirements that Seiko put on themselves for the design, fabrication and testing of their dive watches.
A unique aspect of the Seiko's 1978 Quartz Diver's is the special case construction. Until now, it was hard to create a more compact Tuna-Can construction that is both suitable for daily use as for use underwater voor beginner- and sport divers. Thanks to a recent invention of Seiko, it's now possible to bring back the thickness of the watch to just 11,5 mm and the diameter to 46,7 mm, without cutting the reliability and safety.
The Seiko caliber V157 is a Solar watch with date display. Seiko Solar makes use of a ultra-efficient Solar cell capable of creating energy out of all kinds of light. All of this energy is saved in a tiny rechargeable battery that has a better durability than than conventional batteries. The hourwork is protected against overloading. This makes the watch pretty much maintenance-free. If fully charged, the caliber V157 has a energy reserve of 10 months. If there is danger of energy shortage, the watch will give off a warning by making the second-hand take steps of 2 instead of 1. The watch contains a handy instant start-function. This means that if the watch is out of energy, and is exposed to enough (sun)light, the watch starts immediately and the watch makes the second-hand take steps of 2 seconds until it has enough energy again. Seiko Solar is one of the most appealing points of Seiko's Clean Energy Concept.
